Bangladesh Foreign Minister attends G 20 meet in Varanasi, calls to uphold the true spirit of multilateralism

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen has called for upholding the true spirit of multilateralism for the greater interest of the global community.

In his intervention during the G20 Development Ministers meeting (G20 DMM) in Varanasi on Monday, Dr. Momen stressed on the challenges faced by the countries of Global South. He called for support from developed countries on means of implementation, financing and capacity building. Dr. Momen highlighted the various steps and achievements made by Bangladesh in implementation of SDGs, Green Development and adopting various initiatives to facilitate the ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ Mission, said an official press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), Bangladesh.

Foreign Ministers/Ministers from a number of the G20 countries as well as guest countries attended this meeting between June 11-13, which primarily focused on multilateralism, progress of implementation of SDGs and Green Development.

Dr. Momen met the External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S Jaishankar on the sidelines of the G20 DMM. Both Foreign Ministers expressed satisfaction on the existing excellent bilateral relations between the two countries. They discussed issues of bilateral interest and the various important events which are expected to take place in the coming days. Dr. Momen appreciated India for successfully steering the G20 meetings and their leadership role in addressing the global challenges under India’s G20 presidency.

EAM Dr. Jaishankar tweeted that the G20 DMM unanimously agreed on two major outcomes including an action plan for accelerating progress on the SDGs and high level principles for sustainable development. Dr. Jaishankar expressed happiness that the G20 responded to the voice of the Global South.
